AZ-08: Kolbe (R) retiring

Another open seat for the GOP to defend in the house: Rep. Kolbe is announcing that he will not seek re-election in 2006. I am not very familiar the district, but while the DCCC doesn't list any Democratic candidates, politics1.com lists Jeff Latas, an ex-Air Force fighter pilot, as a name. Another Fighting Dem with a fighting chance!

Any other possibilities? As an open seat, AZ-08 would seem very winnable.

I hear rumors that AZ-08 CD is a swing District- It is slightly more Democratic than Renzi's District.

Re: AZ-08 (3.00 / 2)

The Arizona 8th is the least Republican of the Republican districts in Arizona. Bush won 54% in Renzi's district (The AZ-1) in 2004, while he won 53% in Kolbe's district. It includes some of the Eastern suburbs of Tuscon to the New Mexico border and is home to many Hispanics.

In a Democratic wave, this definitely is a swing district. The Dems have a shot here.

Plus Kolbe is fairly moderate. He's the only openly gay Republican in Congress and he's supportive of civil unions, pro-choice and in favor of guest worker status for immigrants. He actually had a conservative primary challenger last year.

The American people; they were for the war before they were against it.
